⚡Community #1
Happy Friday! If you missed yesterday’s update, here it is.
Every Friday, we’re going to do something different — rather than focus on what’s happening in the world, we’re going to focus on our community. We’ll showcase an unconventional activist, recommend one of our favorite books, highlight events worth attending, share relevant job postings, and more.
Plus, we’d love to highlight something that you’re working on, or simply something that you want to celebrate — so please reply to this email and share, and we’ll incorporate it in!
Finally, for those of you who missed out on our rants from the week, fear not — we’ll offer a quick recap of everything we talked about.
Enjoy the read, and have a great weekend!

Let’s get into it!
Monday (Unconventional Activist)
Tomorrow is a daily newsletter for the unconventional activist. We explored how activism isn’t limited to protests and how different types of people can produce change. We also announced new initiatives in the form of events and funding. You can also see those below, we’ve added some more information!
Tuesday (Levitation)
We covered Hong Kong and its decision to bar Joshua Wong from the election. We also dove America’s crumbling faith in media and the value of local news.
Wednesday (Corruption)
We covered how location might matter more than the type of renewable energy in the US and the protests that are igniting all around the world in hopes to combat government corruption and increase transparency.
Thursday (Candy)
We covered how Twitter decided to nix political ads because they believed a political message’s reach should be earned. We also explored the future of packaging and how employees are fighting against the unethical practices of PE.
Holly Whitaker, founder of Tempest
“In 2012, I found myself living the life that I had dreamed I would. I lived in the big city, brunched on Sundays, had a small army of friends and my social calendar was full. I wore the right clothes, had the right apartment, maintained the right waistline, and I was at the height of my career - a Director at a hot San Francisco health tech startup.
By all accounts of what I had imagined for myself— by all accounts of what society told me I should have— I’d made it.
Except, I hadn't. Because the entire thing was a show.”

A holistic approach
Tempest's online sobriety school offers a tech-supported path to recovery.
Founded in 2014, New York-based Tempest has raised about $14.3 million in total VC funding… Since founding Tempest, which has enrolled 4,000 participants to date, Whitaker received a two-book deal from Random House to document her methodologies and path to sobriety. Her first book, ‘Quit Like a Woman: The Radical Choice to Not Drink in a Culture Obsessed with Alcohol,’ will be released on December 31.
Today, her business has 28 employees and plans to build out its team, invest in marketing — where it’s historically had very low spend — and explore business opportunities within the enterprise using cash from the $10 million Series A.

The Purpose Economy
In 2014 Aaron Hurst, Ashoka fellow and founder of Imperative and Taproot Foundation, published The Purpose Economy, the book that catalyzed the purpose revolution. With his prediction that purpose was the next major economic era, many are now racing to find answers and direction toward discovering their personal, professional, and organizational purpose. Leaders from around the world have embraced Hurst’s work and have asked for more.
In this expanded and updated edition Hurst unpacks critical new research and tools for individuals and organizations to find purpose and thrive in this new era.
Based on interviews with hundreds of entrepreneurs, a new survey of over 100,000 people and refined societal trends, Hurst shows that this new era is fueling demand for purpose-centered professionals who not only create more satisfying careers, but also contribute more productively to teams and organizations.
A new view of success based on relationships, impact, and growth is spreading across the globe, and individuals and organizations that embrace that view have emerged as the leaders of the new economy.
